Sixth Form Prospectus

Sixth Form Simply extraordinary

Welcome to the Sixth Form Sixth Form at Abingdon is a time full of excitement and possibility for our students. It’s a chance to pursue passions, discover some new ones, and even redefine yourself if you wish. We view this period as one of transition between being a school pupil and a university student or employee, something which is scaffolded and supported throughout the two years of A Level study. Ours is a fast-paced academic environment, but we also pride ourselves on the friendly and welcoming atmosphere which is fostered both between peers, and between staff and students. The support offered at a personal level includes our pastoral care but also extends to the way that students look out for each other. We are also extremely proud of the support which students receive through our comprehensive careers guidance and university application programme which we call After Abingdon.

Here’s what Abingdon offers At Abingdon, we fit our timetable around the subjects our students want to study which means we are able to accommodate almost all of the nearly 150 combinations of A Level subjects that our students want to take. In most years, we teach around 25 subjects. Placed at the heart of the school, the Sixth Form centre occupies the ground floor of Beech Court and has university-style facilities including open plan social learning spaces, social and private study areas, meeting rooms, outside seating and collaborative work areas. Sixth Formers have easy access to the careers office, UCAS facilities and Library - all of which are based in the same building. A Level choices and curriculum Sixth Form Centre Alongside the main curriculum, we offer a number of academic extension opportunities including the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). Usually, it’s also possible to offer GCSE languages (German and Spanish) as well as a Creative Writing qualification. Those seeking higher level study in specific subjects (particularly those aiming for High Tier university destinations) will find that departments provide academic extension sessions, support for competition entries and writing opportunities. We also provide comprehensive support for pre-interview assessments that are required for many degrees. Academic Extension Students initially study four subjects in the Lower Sixth, with the option to focus on three from the Lent term of the Lower Sixth. There is provision for those students wishing to pursue four subjects to A Level, or five subjects if studying Further Maths. Class sizes range from 5 to 16, averaging around 12 or 13. A Level results by subject. Details of sixth form curriculum. Further information

Our full time career guidance service helps students decide what the next few years beyond school will involve, whether that’s applying to university, having a gap year, or moving directly into employment. The vast majority of our students go on to high tier universities and Abingdon’s specialist team of advisers help navigate students (and their parents) through the admissions process - both at UK and International institutions. Most Abingdon students are offered places at their firm choice of university and the range of subjects they choose to study reflects the very diverse nature of our Sixth Form and those within it. Sixth Formers benefit from the active Old Abingdonian Club which provides bespoke career advice, work experience, and networking opportunities plus awards for Sixth Formers who are looking to travel in the summer holidays or during a gap year. Beyond school

Personal development We appreciate that maturity doesn’t happen overnight and some individuals will need more guidance and support than others. Tutors and teachers get to know students well and understand what suits each individual. Students remain with the same tutor throughout the Sixth Form and this tutor is the principal link between home and school. In addition to academic lessons, Abingdon offers a weekly tutor period which covers PSHCE topics; an enrichment programme; at least two sports sessions per week and, in the Lower Sixth, supervised study periods.

Activities Integrated into the timetable, our enviable Other Half co-curricular programme provides an extensive variety of over 150 activities and subjects. Sixth Formers have the opportunity to become more proficient in an existing interest, learn a new skill, mentor younger peers and lend their support within the wider community. In turn, this helps our young people to develop important life skills including societal awareness, leadership, independence, perseverance, resilience, empathy, patience and kindness.

Weekly and full boarding are popular options at Abingdon and almost half of our boarders are Sixth Formers. Boarders benefit from the School’s superb facilities and from a full activity programme. With no commute to and from school, there’s plenty of time to study and to enjoy boarding life. Boarding
