Seeing Durdle Door, Stair Hole and Lulworth Cove on day one; and Swanage Bay, Old Harry Rocks and Studland Bay on day two, complemented their classroom studies providing examples of erosional and depositional features. They also gained valuable insight into local geology, weather, tidal systems and marine activity in a visit to the National Coastwatch lookout at Peveril Point. In November, Year 7 and 8 students put their filmmaking skills to the test with a One Day Film School workshop. Pupils learned film history, flight choreography, how to use an iPad like a pro and screenwriting, before working in teams to create a short 2 minute film. They had to then introduce their film and give it a poster tagline. Worthy winners were ‘Rescue of the Rich’ whose engaging, entertaining story and technical excellence particularly impressed the judges. And the Oscar for Best Picture goes to… Both Year 5 classes enjoyed a trip to Abingdon School’s Science club, run by 6th Form Ambassadors. 5S learned about Bunsen Burners, including safety, how to change the flame and what colour different chemicals produce when tested. In the regional qualifiers, the U13s fought hard to win their heat, taking them through to the IAPS National Finals, held on 20 November at Culford School and in which they came 3rd in the Group Stage, going into the Plate competition in which they were victorious, placing them 9th in the country. The U11s came 2nd in their regional qualifier which saw them compete at the IAPS National Finals on 27 November. Our squad did brilliantly, not losing a game in the Group Phase and qualifying them for 2nd place in their group. In the quarter final, they lost 0-1 against their rivals but this still placed them within the top 8 IAPS schools in the country. We are so proud of all our teams - well done!
