The Little Careers Book

NOTES ࢚࢚ The profession is incredibly wide and varied; underpinning everything is how property functions and generates income and profit. ࢚࢚ In general, you can choose to work either in commercial, residential, or rural property. ࢚࢚ Employers range from very large property firms (usually in big cities), to small specialist firms (of a huge diversity), and organisations that own, invest in or otherwise deal with large tracts of land (such as Network Rail, airports, mortgage companies, large retailers). ࢚࢚ Specialisms include agency work (buying and selling property), valuation, business rating, property and facilities management, property development, planning, and property investment management. ࢚࢚ If you are a surveyor, you could find yourself working with architects, businesses; engineering consultancies; housing associations; local authorities; property developers; and building and civil engineering companies. It’s exciting! ࢚࢚ As a surveyor, you can specialise in project management, planning, value engineering, supply chain management, or legal contracting services. ࢚࢚ Rural estate management can range from supervising agricultural investments to the management of staffed country estates and visitor attractions. ࢚࢚ Auctioneering (of houses, office buildings, and shops) is a career option. ࢚࢚ The profession includes lawyers who specialise in property law, too. TRUTHS XX A surveyor is someone who values my house when I need a mortgage. XX Property developers make fortunes and are all crooks. XX Commercial developers are rugby playing, beer drinking, wheeler dealers. XX Surveyors stand on street corners measuring things. MYTHS RANGE OF OCCUPATIONS
