Abingdon Preparatory School 18 April 2020 Pre-Prep toys and games afternoon The boys delighted in learning about games and pastimes from their grandparents’ childhoods and the hall was filled with excitement, laughter and lots of delicious cake! Reception explored Tom McLaughlin’s book, The Story Machine , about a strange machine that he finds in the loft of his house. World Book Day Sherlock Holmes, aka the Headmaster, welcomed an unusual range of characters to school: James with his Giant Peach, Gangsta Granny, a Beetle Boy, a Stick Man and a Pug from the popular books by Philip Reeve plus Dr Seuss Cats and favourites from Harry Potter. The judge’s winner was Treebeard the Ent from Lord of the Rings. Mary Poppins, Dracula, Hagrid, Cruella de Vil and the Saucepan Man took over teaching for the day with a very green Grinch winning the staff prize. Science Week saw every year group getting involved and exploring many and varied science topics. Activities ranged from Reception thoroughly enjoying making slime, to Year 8 extracting chloroplasts from spinach with a team from Oxford University. One of the eagerly anticipated highlights was the hatching of the chicks cared for by Year 1. Exploring Science Street Dance The boys enthusiastically embraced their street dance ‘taster’ session and this very popular activity will be added to the over 100 activities currently on offer as part of our Other Half.
