Abingdon News No.53

Abingdon Sport This has been an outstanding term and year for Abingdon Squash. We have had a quite exceptional squad of seniors and juniors who have played and beaten most of the top squash schools and lost only to Eton and Aylesbury, both of which have made the top eight schools in the country. We qualified top of our group for the National Shield, and were hot favourites to win at the national finals (postponed by the coronavirus). Congratulations to the whole squad for Abingdon’s most successful year ever. Hockey The Club has had a bountiful season with some brilliant results and increased participation throughout the age groups. As a result of winning the County Championships in the junior, intermediate and senior age groups, 8 pupils were selected to race for Oxfordshire at the National Final. The Club has been prominent front runners at a number of race meets and recorded victories at Wellington, Marlborough, Radley and St Edward’s. Particular highlights include 2nd place at the ESAA National Cup Final and placing 6th at the King Henry VIII Relays. A fantastic season for the Club with 14 teams fielded every week. The 1st XI remained unbeaten in the ISHL for the second year running. They also progressed to the 5th round of the England Hockey Cup. The U16s and U15s played some brilliant hockey and a special mention goes to the U15As who won their respective ISHL league. The U14As also remained unbeaten in their ISHL league. In the Lower School the U12s and U13s enjoyed an excellent season, getting through to the regional finals. “Thank you all for another fantastic season! It has been a very special one and my last as Director of Hockey. I would like to thank everyone that has been involved with the hockey program for the last few years, the progression of the Club has been down to so many different people and I cannot thank you enough for the support and effort you have put into the Club.” – Olly Deasey Lower school boys (above) competed in the annual inter-tutor group cross-country event, completing two laps of Albert Park. Luke Skates (2nd year) and Ralph Allen (1st year) led the runners home in their respective year groups. Cross-Country 16 Squash
