8 April 2019 Top prizes in Annual Law Lecture Essay Congratulations to sixth formers George Carver and German Baraev who won the first and second prizes in the Annual Law Lecture Essay Competition. George received £100 plus a week’s work experience at Freeths solicitors and German’s second prize was £100 and the opportunity to visit court with a retired judge. The essay competition followed the annual High Sheriff’s Law Lecture in October given by Michael Beloff QC and titled “Can Sport do without the Law?”. Students were asked to write an essay exploring the concepts in the lecture. Abingdon News YE’s Cowley Trade Fair Three teams took part in one of the most important dates in the Young Enterprise calendar, the Cowley Trade Fair. All teams managed to sell a considerable amount of stock, including collapsible coffee cups, water bottles and a range of bamboo products. Particular congratulations go to team “Bamboozled” for winning the Customer Service Award. Later in the term at the Abingdon Fair, Team Aqualapse managed to sell all their stock and had a very promising line of enquiry from a local coffee shop who thought that one of the colours of their collapsing coffee cup would complement their business. A taste of Electronic Engineering Lower sixth physicists spent the day at the University of Southampton Electronic Engineering department. Following a lecture and tour from one of the current students the boys completed a workshop building a heart rate monitor from electrical components. Abingdon take on Eton at Chess Playing away in the first round of the regional stage of the prestigious National Schools’ Chess Championship, Abingdon defeated Eton 5.5-0.5. Congratulations to Abingdon’s players on a fine team performance.
