6 January 2019 Abingdon News Studying Geology The annual Geology Day at the Natural History Museum in Oxford was enjoyed by all with talks on topics as diverse as “snow ball” earth, the geology of Mars and volcano risk management. There was also a chance to go behind the scenes at the Museum and look at William Smith’s original geology maps and dinosaur remains that have been found in Oxfordshire. Record success in the Arkwright Engineering Scholarships Founded in 1991, the Arkwright Engineering Scholarships programme aims to identify, inspire and nurture future leaders in engineering and design. Only the highest performing students are selected and those who succeed receive academic and financial support during their studies. Abingdon has a long history of students successfully being awarded the scholarship, with many now working in the fields of architecture, engineering and product design. This year was an exceptional year with a record four students securing the prestigious award. This now gives us a total of six scholars in the Sixth Form. The Bellringing Club joined forces with ringers from St Helen’s Church for an outing to local churches. The boys developed their skills and improved their striking.
