In the Lower and Middle school all boys learn physics. The aim is to promote a clear understanding of the basic principles that will be essential in the 21st century whatever career a boy might wish to pursue. A substantial proportion (about 30-40%) of the year group choose to go on to study physics at A level.

The 6th form course used is that designed by the IoP (Advancing Physics) because of its emphasis on relevant modern physics and its effective teaching methods. Here the aim shifts to those who wish to pursue a career that is more scientifically based. This may not be physics or engineering although about one third of the year group do take this type of degree. Academic results are strong, with boys regularly continuing their study of Physics at university - often winning places to Oxford and Cambridge.

The department has five full-time teachers, assisted by a team of technicians. Located on the ground floor of the science block, the Physics department comprises two large laboratories and two smaller ones, a preparation room and office. All the laboratories are extremely well equipped and recently modernised. One laboratory is equipped with nine iMac computers and data-logging equipment, which are used extensively. There is an emphasis on boys doing the experiments themselves. There is a large element of practical coursework in the A level course.
